From: Jeff Woertz Date: March 19, 1994 (REVISION #1) Topic: Ultra Compressor II test results vs ARJ and PKZIP I recently had the chance to test the new ULTRA COMPRESSOR II against the latest versions of ARJ (2.41) and PKZIP (2.04g). Using maximum compression on all tests, here is a summary of my findings: PROGRAM NAME # FILES ORIG. SIZE ARJ 2.41 PKZIP 2.04G UC II ------------ ------- ---------- -------- ----------- ------ Comanche 189 12,417,024 7,420,911 7,370,658 7,239,334 Blake Stone 18 3,411,942 1,298,643 1,293,415 1,284,056 Chuck Yeager 10 1,329,007 1,197,135 1,195,876 1,192,328 My A/V files 92 5,137,737 3,432,817 3,420,810 3,300,678 My utils files 125 1,024,537 935,471 940,672 918,501 My WIN System 133 6,563,924 3,281,916 3,269,254 3,196,414 Lotus Racing 3 1,344,935 1,113,651 1,112,941 1,111,514 Wolf 3-D 43 4,871,489 1,994,019 1,987,959 1,961,018 BlueMax Flight 11 1,639,828 945,642 945,909 924,842 Red Baron 51 2,141,289 1,689,829 1,674,463 1,647,482 .WAV files 31 788,202 556,851 555,904 521,094 .GIF files 17 2,818,750 2,790,614 2,792,632 2,795,808 .WRI files 55 131,328 57,437 59,108 48,630 .AVI files 6 7,708,922 5,488,524 5,404,057 5,208,848 .FLI files 14 3,960,424 3,922,404 3,920,104 3,919,860 As you can see, Ultra Compressor II had the best compression in these tests, except while compressing .GIF files. It was also the fastest compressor. I am a devoted ARJ fan, especially due to the fact that ARJ lets you use multi- ple disk volumes so you can back up large programs or your whole hard disk while ARJ prompts you to put the next backup disk in the drive. Unfortunately, Ultra Compressor II does not seem to have that capability (as far as I can tell). I will continue to test these three compression programs and post my results on this board. Yours Truly, Jeff Woertz
